Shared Roots, Different Histories
Lao and Thai people share deep historical and cultural connections. Both cultures developed within the broader Tai world of mainland Southeast Asia and were shaped by centuries of interaction with neighboring cultures.
The historic Lan Xang kingdom played an important role in the development of Lao culture, while the kingdoms of Siam shaped what would become modern Thai culture.
Over time, however, Laos and Thailand followed very different political and historical paths. Those experiences helped shape their distinct identities.
Language: One of the Biggest Connections
Lao and Thai are closely related Tai-Kadai languages, and they share many words, grammatical features, and cultural expressions.
This is why Lao and Thai speakers can sometimes understand each other, especially in casual conversation or in communities near the Lao–Thai border.
Thai media has also had a major influence in Laos, with Thai television, music, movies, and social media being widely accessible.
But Lao and Thai are still different languages, with their own pronunciation, vocabulary, writing systems, and expressions.
Food
If there’s one area where the Lao–Thai connection is impossible to miss, it’s food.
Both cultures love sticky rice, grilled meats, papaya salad, herbs, chilies, fermented ingredients, and bold flavors.
But even when dishes share similar ingredients, preparation and regional traditions can differ.
For example, what many people know as som tam in Thailand has close connections to Lao-style papaya salad, but Lao tam mak hoong has its own traditions and flavor profile.
Religion & Traditions
Both Lao and Thai cultures have been deeply influenced by Theravada Buddhism.
Temples, monks, merit-making, festivals, and Buddhist traditions continue to play important roles in both societies.
You'll also find similarities in traditional celebrations, ceremonies, respect for elders, and ideas surrounding community and family.
So, Are Lao & Thai Culture the Same?
No, but they are closely connected.
