Between my students and everything I see online, the same few things come up again and again. Most people don't struggle with Lao because the language is hard, they struggle because of something they believe about it before they've even started.
Don't let these myths hold you back from starting your Lao journey!
1. 👥 My family learned Lao without classes, so I don't need them to be fluent either.
They probably did, but they also had Lao around them all day, every day for years. That's a lot of hours you don't get when you're living abroad.
Learning naturally is absolutely possible, and everyone's journey looks different. But having someone to guide you saves you a lot of time, and it means you can finally ask about all those words you've heard your whole life without ever quite knowing what they meant.
2. 🚫 I feel like I need to speak perfectly, or else I shouldn't speak at all.
We all start from somewhere. It's okay not to speak it perfectly in the beginning.
Speaking Lao for the first time may feel weird and out of place, and honestly it will for a little while. But that shouldn't hold you back from practising, because that's the only way it starts to feel normal.
3. ✏️ You must learn how to read, write and speak at the same time.
You don't have to do it all at once. Trying to would mean dedicating a huge amount of time, which quickly feels overwhelming, and that's exactly the point where a lot of learners give up.
If you're just getting started, speaking is a great place to build your foundation. Reading can come later, once you've got something to read.
4. ⏰ It's too late to start now. I don't think I can do it. It seems really hard.
Do you know what's actually hard?
Not being able to communicate with your loved ones. Not being able to join discussions at family events. Not knowing how to respond when elders ask you questions.
