In my years of teaching, I've tried a lot of methods to help my students make real progress in their Lao.
Some worked. Some didn't.
Here are the key lessons I've learned along the way:
1. 🎯 Never forget your why
What do you want to be able to do a year from now, and why does it matter to you? Write your answers down and learn with intention.
On the days you don't feel like it, go back and read what you wrote. Remind yourself why you started.
2. 🧱 Build a strong foundation
Solid groundwork makes it much easier to understand more complex Lao as you go. It's tempting to rush ahead to the phrases you want, but the basics are what hold everything else up.
3. 🔥 Stay consistent
Consistency looks different for everyone. Ten minutes a day is better than three hours once a month.
What matters is not burning out or taking long breaks, because getting back on track is always harder than staying on it. Create a schedule you can realistically keep alongside work and life.
4. 👥 Find an accountability partner
Nobody should learn Lao alone. Progress is always easier with the right support on your side, whether that's a family member, a friend, fellow learners, or our Lao community.
5. 💪🏼 Practice Practice Practice
I cannot emphasise this enough. Thinking it in your head is not the same as saying it out loud.
Start small and use Lao in your daily life wherever you can. Greet your parents in Lao. Order in Lao. Send a voice note instead of typing.
6. 💃🏻 Have fun
Find a learning method that works best for YOU. Alongside structured lessons, explore content you'd actually enjoy, like Lao movies or singing along to Lao songs.
If it feels like homework every single day, it gets very hard to keep going.
7. 🚫 Don't be afraid to make mistakes
Even as a teacher, I still make mistakes in Lao. But don't the best lessons come from them?
Lao English School wouldn't have come this far if it wasn't for all the mistakes I made along the way. What matters is that you turn them into learning experiences.Wrap up
