As someone who grew up as a Lao-American, I've always been curious about my family's language, history, and culture. Over the years, I've slowly collected a small library of Lao books that have helped me reconnect with my roots. While some are focused on learning the Lao language, others dive into the history, culture, food, and literature. Although I've read some more thoroughly than others, every book has taught me something new and has become a meaningful part of my journey. If you're learning Lao or simply want to understand Laos better, these are the books I'd recommend exploring.

🍽️ The Lao Kitchen

Saeng Douangdara

No collection about Laos would feel complete without a cookbook. The Lao Kitchen beautifully combines traditional recipes with stories about Lao culture and family. Beyond teaching you how to prepare classic Lao dishes, it explains the cultural significance behind many of the meals that bring families together. For anyone wanting to explore Laos through its food, this is an excellent place to start.

Every language learned eventually needs a reliable dictionary, and this has become mine. 🏛️ A History of Laos

Martin Stuart-Fox

If you're interested in understanding Laos beyond the basics, this is one of the best historical resources available. Martin Stuart-Fox covers the country's development from ancient kingdoms through colonialism and into the modern era. It isn't exactly light reading... the material is detailed and sometimes dense but it's an excellent reference if you truly want to understand Laos' complex history.

I also have a personal connection to this author. During high school, I wrote a research paper on Laos and frequently referenced Martin Stuart-Fox's work because of how comprehensive and well-researched it is.

✏️ Lao for Beginners (Second Edition)

Benjawan Poomsan Becker & Buasawan Simmala

If someone asked me where to begin learning Lao, this would probably be my first recommendation. The book introduces pronunciation, grammar, sentence structure, and useful conversations in a clear, organized format. It also includes audio recordings, which are incredibly helpful when learning correct pronunciation.

Although I think complete beginners may find certain sections challenging, I personally found this book helped me reconnect with much of the Lao vocabulary I had forgotten over the years.

This was another gift from my late grandfather after one of his trips back to Laos around 2010, which makes it even more meaningful to me.

🗣️ English–Lao Phrasebook with Useful Wordlist

Center for Applied Linguistics

This is one of my favorite practical resources. Rather than functioning like a traditional dictionary, this phrasebook focuses on useful conversations, everyday expressions, and common vocabulary. It's especially helpful if you come across Lao words or phrases and want to understand how they're used in real-life situations. Like several books in my collection, I inherited this from my grandfather, making it both a language resource and a meaningful family keepsake.

Final thoughts

My Lao book collection may still be small, but every one of these books has helped me better understand my heritage in a different way.
