🌱 Lao roots

Aleesha, Lao-American

Aleesha

I decided to learn Lao in order to better communicate with my grandmothers, my in-laws, and other Lao people in my community. I also want to be able to speak Lao with my husband and children. Learning the Lao language and culture feels right, it makes me feel connected to my heritage.

Along this journey, I was able to meet more people like me who want to learn Lao and an amazing teacher whose passion for educating shines in her lessons. Now, with a wider Lao vocabulary and a better grasp of the basic grammar rules, I feel even more connected to my culture.

Lao English School provided me a safe and structured environment to learn Lao from the ground up. I've tried to learn Lao from my family, and I've run into a lot of challenges. If I have questions about grammar or pronunciation, LES always has the answer. I feel comfortable learning, practicing my Lao in this community because I've met several people in the same situation as me.

After a year of taking lessons and interacting with the LES community, I've developed enough confidence in my Lao to start practicing with my family again. Even if I'm not perfect, I have enough foundational knowledge to learn from my mistakes and continuously improve.

Thank you for your hard work in building this program and community. I think that LES is making an impact to people like me that really want to learn Lao, and I'm grateful that it exists. Everyone is different, but after the Level 3+ Reading/Writing course, I've received enough tools and resources I need to continue learning and improving with more independence. So I am going to stick with the community and keep pushing myself to learn Lao!

Ginie really creates a welcoming learning environment for students of all levels. The breakdown of each class helped me connect the dots, fostering my expressive language. Now, I'm able to respond in Lao when speaking with my parents.

Namphon, Lao-French

Lao is my mother tongue, but I wasn't able to speak fluently. The group class is a great way to develop communication through basic Lao vocabulary. I really enjoyed the 3 conversational class levels and noticed the progress we made with my classmates. I learned how to read and write in Lao, and now I feel proud of myself. I can finally speak, read almost everything, and I've started writing in Lao.

Océane, Lao-French

Oceane

I decided to learn lao to reconnect with my cultural heritage in the hope to transmit it myself one day. My mum is lao but growing up in France I never spoke lao fluently and it made me sad to think that a whole part of our family history would get lost along the way.

Lao English school allowed me to capitalize on the words and sentences I heard when I was little. It made it easier for me to travel in Laos and interact with people there.

Merci ! All the work you do is helping so many people like me, eager to reconnect to their origins, relatives. For many years I felt frustrated not to speak lao, I’m not quite there yet but LES keeps me going in the right direction ! The materials and the platform keep evolving for the good, keep going 😍🙏

I started learning Lao so I could achieve my goal of having some basic conversations with my partner’s parents. I began this journey on my own with a lot of self-study, and even though I eventually started working with a tutor online, learning a language in relative isolation caused me to lose motivation from time to time. When I came across Lao English School on social media I was in one of those ruts, so I was very excited to see that they offered group classes. Even better, around that time they were preparing to launch their Community site. Being able to interact with other language learners on similar journeys is exactly what I was looking for to re-energize my learning, so I signed up as soon as I could.

Since the launch of the Community page, I have been so impressed with the resource that Ginie and her team are building. They include audio, translations, Lao script, and “Lao karaoke” (Lao transliterated into Latin script) in all of the weekly lesson materials so students at any level can use them to study and build their vocabulary at their own pace. The best part about the community though, in my opinion, is the live events. Having the opportunity to come together in real time is an enormous benefit to learning and has allowed me to meet people from all over the world.

Ginie is a wonderful, patient, and talented teacher and even though I have not been able to sign up for a group class just yet, I can see the confidence she has instilled in her students from these interactions. I have also really enjoyed the quizzes and writing challenges, these quick exercises have helped me keep focus on my Lao learning during weeks when I otherwise have little time to study. If you want to boost your language learning this is an incredible complement to classes and solo-study, I genuinely cannot recommend the LES Community enough!

Tonight I laughed my whole way through that lesson, it was so good! Ginie is an amazingly supportive teacher who knows how to build people's confidence and is always incredibly prepared knowing just what to say, she is so patient especially as my listening skills aren't the best but In tonight's lesson for the first time I started asking Ginie questions and felt like I was just having a normal conversation catching up with a friend (just in another language) and laughing alot, I can't believe it! 😁

Every week I feel like I improve a bit more. Ginie you are incredibly clever teacher and I'm so glad I found you. Highly recommend.

Ginie is the best Lao teacher I could ever imagine having! She is very patient and she is taking me methodically through the syllabus, she has the perfect blend of recapping and incorporating what I have already learnt through conversation and also adding in new material. She is an extremely good teacher and I would highly recommend her to anyone who wants to learn this beautiful language. Thank you Ginie!

It was fun and interactive, especially for someone who didn't come with any Lao background at all.

🏞️ Living in Laos

After studying with Lao language schools for a few years in Vientiane, I was finding it hard to find resources and teaching that was suited to my level. Most courses were aimed at beginners or crash courses for people who weren't staying long. I'd followed Lao English School on social media and thought I'd try it out. I found that the lessons were thoughtfully planned to match my level and interests, allowing me to learn vocabulary and explore topics that truly engaged me.

Not only were the lessons enjoyable and beneficial for furthering my language ability, but we also discussed things that deepened my understanding of Lao culture and society. It's been a great experience!

I had difficulty communicating with local people and colleagues because most of them don’t speak English. I felt excited to learn the Lao language because I finally found a way to break the language barrier in both daily life and work environments, especially when I mustered up the courage to start speaking Lao with sellers, colleagues, and locals. I never anticipated grasping it faster than expected.

The teaching style at Lao English School is amazing. They taught in ways I could understand and helped me improve both my speaking and writing. I loved how my teacher chose the topics and gave me homework. This didn’t just improve my Lao language but also my general knowledge and thinking skills. I enjoyed meeting new people from different countries around the world. This was a great way for me to practice my conversational skills with my classmates and learn more about Lao culture. I appreciate all the lessons from the beautiful and skillful teacher, Ginie.
